The primary motor cortex contains a detailed map of the body, and a disproportionately large area is devoted to the mouth, tongue, and throat—reflecting the importance and complexity of speech.

When you speak, your brain must orchestrate the movements of your respiratory system, larynx, pharynx, tongue, lips, and jaw in precise temporal sequences. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles control airflow from the lungs, providing the breath support needed for vocalization.
